In our classroom we do lots of moving and grooving. We often do lots of group work that requires us to work in groups of 2 up to 10. During a typical class period we will sing songs about our learning, have a class meeting on the floor to make an anchor chart, pair up with a partner to discuss a topic and work in a small group to display our learning. Our current desks and seating make it very hard for us to easily accommodate this.By having flexible seating we can rearrange quickly many times a day. We also have lots of students that need movement to help stay focused. More and more research shows that movement that in integrated into learning is much more effective than the sit and get model. This will allow them to move safely without distracting others around them. It also gives the students a choice of their best learning environment. This is important because when they have more choice they have more "buy in" for the class. I also think it is an important lesson for students to be cognoscente of how their environment effects them and their learning, which can help them throughout their life.
