It is my job to do all I can to provide my students with an environment full of fun, thought-provoking experiences, which will set the stage for their entire school career. The best way for young children to learn is by working on hands-on activities. STEM activities and math workshop have been a main focus for our students this year, as it is giving our students a hands-on approach to problem solving. In math workshop, we begin with a whole-group mini-lesson followed by a rotation of three stations. Two of the rotations give the students an opportunity for Independent practice, which the children consider “play”. This the most important part of math workshop, as it is where they are constructing meaning and having conversations about what they have learned. STEM activities have taken first grade learning to a whole new level. Students need to work through an engineering design to problem solve. I am making STEM bins for our students to work from with items such as Legos and Dominoes, along with little items like pipe cleaners and foam balls. Each item makes for some interesting building in first grade. Any help purchasing these item would be greatly appreciated and will turn my student into young scholars.
