In March, learning to play piano stopped for the majority of my students. They had no instrument at home to practice on and did not get to learn their end of year solos or duets that they had been looking forward to all year. Instead, they did music theory drills and created some music using their computers or phones online, but the reason they take piano lab class is to learn how to play! When school is in session, they often bring in their friends during lunch and after school to show off what they have learned. They are often very proud of the new skills they have developed, and it really helps build their self confidence! In preparation for the 2020-2021 school year, my fellow piano lab teachers and I have found and developed a great deal of online curriculum to help them learn step by step. All this curriculum work will be useless if students are sent home with nothing to practice on!
This past spring, my students' biggest wish was that they had a way to keep learning to play the popular and classical songs that they love! The Casio Tones I have selected are very portable, and are just about the cheapest keyboards available that are still touch sensitive and sound good. My kids would be very grateful to have something like this to use at home!
The need is actually much larger than the 50 that I am requesting, I usually have 130 students each year, and district wide, there are usually at least 700 piano lab students each year. But 50 would be a good start!
