Math is like learning another language. It is a powerful language that invisibly hides beneath the foundation of just about everything from art, to technology and even nature. Sadly, learning it on paper, is like studying the alphabet without ever learning to read. Students are studying the letters, but are missing the amazing depth, power and creativity found when they can read written language. Manipulatives, like pattern blocks, cuisenaire rods and algebra tiles, give students the opportunity to discover, find patterns and make sense of mathematical symbolism and rules - it puts the creativity and play back in learning math. Students of all ages, even adults, benefit from touching, moving and experimenting with physical items. This level of play helps the brain to make connections and builds depth of understanding. As Einstein said, "Play is the highest form of research." Many students struggle with math. By slowing down and giving them the opportunity to play, they will be able to make needed connections and see the purpose and function of what they are learning. The gift of mathematical manipulatives can help students overcome their dysfunctional relationship with math and restore their confidence in themselves.
