My kids have named our class The Sock Monkeys after my collection of sock monkeys and fidgets. They love tackling challenges in math and mixing current events or sports with math inquiries. This past month we researched the mathematics behind the Winter Olympics and NCAA March Madness and basketball. They love mixing Superheroes and Star Wars with math problems or games. In book clubs, we have tackled topics of banned books, civil rights movement and parallels to current events courtesy of The Watsons Go to Birmingham, grief and the meaning of life via Jeremy Fink and developed empathy and awareness of disabilities thanks to Out of My Mind. We'll keep reading more selections and applying the author's writing techniques in the months to come. Frequently students would like to participate but lack funds to buy their own copy of the book.
