This project will allow my students to learn and become readers and mathematicians in first grade. The requested materials will be apart of their distance learning toolkit to help support students at home since they cannot be in the classroom. The letter tiles will be used in a variety of contexts to support their phonemic awareness and phonics skills aligned to the Common Core State Standards. By using small group and whole group teaching approaches all students will have multiple opportunity to manipulate words, practice making words, blending sounds, and reading words. The primary lined writing books will support students during writing time when we work on writing narrative stories, opinion, and informational texts. Having this notebook will allow students to have a special place for their writing and will allow for a picture spot to support their writing, which is important in primary grades. The math dice, deck of cards, and counters will also be supplied in their at home toolkits to support weekly math games and lesson activities. Many math games we play require a deck of cards to establish fluency with adding and subtracting within 20. Students need to have hands on experiences and with the counters so they will be able to manipulate numbers using the mats I will also have provided in their toolkits. It is important to me that my students have the best experience they can while distant learning at home and so bringing classroom tools to their home to use will be a tremendous support to students and families. We may assumes families have some of these tools at home, but in reality we cannot assume. I want to know my students have what they need to be successful while at home learning!
