At our charter, the English department works to foster a love of reading and a habit of entering silent, sustained reading time with metacognitive tasks. This method spans across all grade levels and ability levels within all of our classrooms. Independent, student-chosen reading options are something we firmly believe in as a method to create stronger thinkers, writers, and community advocates. As part of this pedagogy, we have found ourselves responsible for providing texts for our students to read out of our own libraries; this is both thrilling and exhausting as we work to find texts that both our high flyers and reluctant readers can and want to take on for their independent reading work. We have all worked to find affordable and diverse texts to meet these needs. It would be fantastic to broaden our students' horizons with some new texts - especially new texts that speak to them where they are right now. I have compiled a dreamer's list of literature that falls into my students' lexiles while also challenging them to think on topics that they either relate very closely to or may contradict their perception of the world. This multicultural literature acts as a powerful tool in enabling students to gain a better understanding of both their own culture and the cultures of others. Through this deeper knowledge, relationships can be strengthened, bridging the gap between students from diverse cultural backgrounds.
