My school is currently revamping our schedule for next school year. Currently, we teach a 7 period day. Students see all 7 teachers each day of the week, which is pretty standard in most schools. The new schedule that will be implemented combines a 7 period day with a block schedule creating a sort of hybrid. With our new hybrid block schedule, we have the unique opportunity to offer a myriad of new electives to students in English, Math, and Science. As an English teacher, I have always hoped to inspire a love of reading within my students. One way of accomplishing this is by offering an English class that doesn't feel like a standard English class. I wanted to create something new, fun, and exciting for my future students, and thus, the idea to teach the Harry Potter books was born. As an avid Harry Potter fan myself, I have always dreamed of teaching a Harry Potter based class. I believe that Harry Potter has a deeper message within its words. Students, and really all people, can learn so much from these novels. In addition, students can learn strong reading skills, without even realizing it! Skills such as: plot structure, character development, literary analysis, and theme. Through project based learning, students will gain skills that will transcend this one class, skills that they can then use elsewhere. Since this is a new course, we do not have any class sets of the Harry Potter books. To help alleviate student costs, I am asking for a class set of Harry Potter Books 1-4 to be donated so that students need not worry about purchasing books if they are not able to. I want to reach as students as possible, and I believe this is a good way to do so.
