Teaching Spanish is no longer about memorizing vocabulary lists or conjugation charts. Today's students need to see how their learning is useful for their everyday lives. In order to really reach my students, we spend 90% of our time in Spanish. I give them the tools to ask questions to clarify but, they have to figure out how to survive! We create stories together and learn useful vocabulary as we go along- things that people would actually say in a Spanish speaking country. Students are inspired to stretch themselves and increase their vocabulary by reading IN SPANISH, not just translations! I have a small selection of books now, but it is primarily used for free time since there are not enough for everyone. With a larger selection of books, my students will be able to have silent reading time, which increases their vocabulary retention, as well as introducing them to new words not specifically taught. They would be able to take the book home to share with family members or reread for better retention or even to practice their pronunciation.
