Implementing Passion Projects has had the greatest impact on student achievement and collaboration than anything else I’ve tried in my 3 years teaching at Fern Creek High School. Students are able to choose what they would like to learn about and must plan and implement their entire project. We had overwhelming interest in painting murals because our building is admittedly not the newest or the prettiest. The students further explained that painting murals would make our art program more visible within our school; something that they felt was strongly needed. Additionally, many students wanted to learn how to use a sewing machine to make their own clothing. Fern Creek once had a robust home economics program, as evidenced by the various parts and pieces of 1970’s Singer machines I’ve found in the storage closets. However, we had to depend on the kindness of our staff to let us borrow machines from their homes for this first round of projects. Therefore, we would love to have a couple of permanent machines as staples of our classroom.
