I selected a colorful rug with color coded squares to provide students with a defined place to sit. Students can turn and talk to students in their row or column during our whole group book club discussions. Developing oral language skills is an important part of our first grade curriculum. Our book club meetings are a special time each day when we discuss science and social studies topics that students will be reading about each week. Students are introduced to new content specific vocabulary words in addition to the traditional reading vocabulary words and phonics skills in our reading curriculum. We will discuss such topics as the formation of fossils and the Boston Tea Party.
