The books will go to the students in the Book Club who often lack reading material at home, and sometimes struggle in their academic classes, but demonstrate a curiosity and love of reading. The book Wonder was requested specifically by a student, and Fruit of the Drunken Tree was written by a local author who would be able to come give a book talk to my students about her work. These books will increase student literacy engagement by providing them with student-requested materials and face-to-face access to a author. Representing diverse protagonists engages students who otherwise may feel invisible or powerless. The requested books reflect the experience of protagonists who are in the minority because of appearances or nationality, much like my students. Visibility in literature can increase confidence among readers who identify similarly and may lead them to increase their academic engagement as they seek out other texts.
