After teaching post secondary for a few years and I noticed that many of students who had taken ASL in high school struggled with the content and grammatical rules, including expressive and receptive language. I moved to the secondary education arena in order to research and develop/implement activities in order to successfully educate and impact students ability to learn and utilize ASL effectively. I am developing activities that will both be entertaining, and attractive to the millennial generation. Students preform best when taught in the target language and use the target language. When spoken English is paired with ASL it distorts the language and changes it's grammatical structure to resemble English vs ASL grammars. ASL is a visual language and the brain process the language with increase success without auditory stimulus (talking etc). Yacker Tracker will provide a visual and fun cuing for the student's to monitor their use of spoken language. It will encourage them to increase expressive language. Yacker Tracker will provide the visual feedback students need to maximize their potential. ASL Scrabble tiles will provide a fun option for game day activities to increase finger spelling recognition and comprehension. Students will play scrabble "voice-off" focusing on their ability to complete an engaging activity with increase exposure to ASL content. Story Cubes will provide opportunity for students to work on both expressive and receptive language by working together. The biggest challenge noted is student's limiting themselves to communicate with their peers. The story cubes will give them increase structure and cues to facilitate communication.
