Even though I teach writing, I have always stressed the importance of reading. I have found that students are more willing to read when they have a more comfy place to read than their desk. By creating comfortable places in the classroom more suitable for reading, you will find that students will want to read more because they will want to go sit in those comfy places. Teachers can easily spend a fortune on making their classroom warm and inviting for their students. We want the kids to be excited when they come into our room. My class library is the heart of my classroom. If kids love to gravitate to that area, their love for reading might grow! It is important to keep their confidence up, so I like to keep my books organized on the shelves by level of difficulty. Its easier for kids to find books they can read, and it saves them time from having to look through all of them. Before Harvey, I had plenty of bookshelves, a big area rug, and a futon in my reading center. Sadly, all of these things were destroyed in the storm. We need bookshelves, fun bean bag chairs, and a large cozy rug because I would love to have a fun reading nook in my classroom once again!
