My Eagles need your help to fly! We are hoping to soar through our new units after Christmas using our brand new calculators! Half of our calculators are missing, broken, or so old that you can't see half of the buttons on them. We are in a rural county with a high poverty rate, and due to the pandemic most parents could not afford to purchase calculators or any "extra" supplies from the list this year. My largest class this year has 27 students in it, and we only have 12 working calculators in our class set to check our work with. After Christmas, we will begin new units that necessitate the use of calculators. The concepts in these units include geometry skills involving the circumference of circles, utilizing pi, and statistics and probability scenarios. We will also begin studying real-world concepts that studetns will need as they become members of our society such as calculating percentages, discounts, and tax. The new calculators will help my students to succeed in math class by not only allowing them to check their work after attempting it on their own, but also allowing them to attempt more difficult problems during enrichment time. The new calculators would help my struggling learners to move through the problems faster, show mastery in a more accurate way, and keep up with the steps in a multi-step equation. These are also more user-friendly and would allow each student to use the same type of calculator in class.
