They say seeing is believing. At the Tanglewood Learning Center, we would have to add hearing, touching, smelling, and feeling. My students love to learn with their senses, and at Tanglewood, they get fully immersed in the whole experience. Students learn as they hike along the Ducktrap River through white pine forest. They begin to understand ecology concepts as they stop to explore with their eyes, ears, noses, and hands. They create new understanding and new appreciation for the natural world as they build fairy houses and forts in the forest. Through this shared overnight experience and their efforts together on the challenge course, they forge stronger bonds with their classmates and teacher. Through this experience and follow-up lessons, I aim to help my students become caring, aware citizens of our planet who can work together to tackle environmental problems in the future.
