I am adopting vertical whiteboard recommendations by Peter Liljedahl's in his new popular book Buiding Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics. He suggests a 360 classroom where whiteboards are mounted all around and students are always working in groups of 3. Peter's research shows that vertical non-permanent writing surfaces (i.e. whiteboards) coupled with frequent random grouping increase student accountability, collaboration and allow thinking to flow more freely. I can't wait to provide these opportunities for my students to collaborate, to take risks, express themselves, learn from their mistakes and build up their critical thinking skills. The WD-40 is used to treat and restore the whiteboards after the finish has worn out.
