We will read the novels and analyze the text by idenfying figurative language and its significance. We will engage in character analysis and character motivation. We will also utilize the academic vocabulary in the text to create a personal thesaurus. Lessons will include the use of research to understand historical fiction. Students will be able to understand the ramifications of growing up during war times and having to be torn away from loved ones in order to be safe. We will identify themes around acceptance and tolerance of others’ differences. In addition, my hope is that when this project gets funded it will also provide an opportunity for collaboration with other colleagues and for my students to interact with grade level peers.
