I have spent several hundred dollars of my own hard-earned substitute dollars (full-time teacher, contracted as a long-term sub) thrift, yard sale, and craigslist shopping. I want a fully functioning alternative learning environment for my students and their alternative learning needs. As I have brought in furniture pieces, my students have been more respectful and productive. They are grateful to learn in a comfortable environment, where they can sit or stand to do their work. They are more engaged. I still have 12 desks in my classroom, and my goal is to increase the amount of alternative seating and decrease the number of traditional desks. I want my classroom to be a warm, intellectually stimulating, high producing, comfortable, safe home for these students; who often don't have these things in their home lives. I have also worked hard to acquire a library for my students. I was fortunate enough to get some amazing book donations including new ones which is something some of my students had never experienced reading. I have no class sets though, nor do we have many at our school. I feel these three books will engage my students, enrich their lives, and enhance their learning.
