Due to a lack of proper storage and space my students often have to take turns and store their sleeping mats on the floor. This not only diminishes the lifespan of their sleeping mats but allows germs to crawl in and dirt to settle on the mats. By allowing each child to have a large clean and cozy mat cubby space they are guaranteed their own personal space, a restful slumber, and the independence to be able to fold their mats, their blankets, towels and store their belongings. The theory of Montessori is teaching independent learning. This is a wonderful tool for independence.
