My students love to move about the room to work with small groups and partners. The carpet is an area where they can come together and collaborate, working together. We use our carpet daily, not only for academic instruction like reading and writing workshop, but for social and emotional learning as well through morning meetings which are crucial for building classroom community and turn and share opportunities. Our current carpet area is much too small for these thing to be beneficial for my students. The small space makes it difficult for them to find personal space when at the carpet during instruction and for everyone to be included in morning meeting without being outside of the circle. This bigger carpet would provide my students with more space and comfort to conduct their learning and enable them to be more engaged during instruction and morning meeting.
