Each year I have amazing students that are having trouble staying engaged and on task with the typical classroom seating and desk arrangement. Like any other student, they get the wiggles and have trouble staying seated and focused during the school day. We expect them to work and sit in seats that are not comfortable for up to 6 hours a day! With flexible seating, the idea is that they have a choice of where they are best able to learn. Physical activity has been shown to improve academic performance. Brain activity slows down when the body becomes stationary. It also gives students a sense of pride and responsibility. I want my students to feel empowered by having a choice and some degree of control in their classroom environment. In my class I will have different options that they will pick from each day. I have already purchased tables, rugs, pillows, stools, lawn chairs, and had some helpful donations to get started! I believe flexible seating can help students' increase brain activity and encourage their excitement for learning.
