I came into this teaching assignment mid-year. When I first saw the classroom, I was shocked. The floors were filthy, papers and half-empty soda bottles were strewn across the floor, some desks were upturned, even the work on display was shoddily done. I made it one of my primary goals to make the classroom a place my students WANTED to be--to teach the kids to take pride and ownership in their classroom and their work. We still have a long way to go. I know these binders which will serve as writing portfolios will help the students see that their work deserves a special place and a exemplary presentation. They will be ecstatic about being able to print title pages in color. I know these materials will help the students to be excited about creating work that they can show off to their parents and peers. I want them to feel that their work deserves showing off.
