Every Friday, our students have a STEM class. This is facilitated and taught by a volunteer who has teaching background with an emphasis in shared inquiry and STEM. As a classroom teacher, I have planned each lesson. Any materials needed have come out of my personal bank account. It is difficult to continue with this initiative with the financing part affecting what we are able to teach. With support for supplies, this opportunity will easily continue. We will be constructing bridges and ramps with the popsicle sticks and tape. We will make mazes and conduct experiments regarding wind and design with the Legos, marbles, and straws. We will apply engineering concepts and study variables with the play dough and toothpicks. All supplies requested support a basic stem MakerSpace area in the classroom and provide countless, different opportunities for a STEM based approach within our third grade curriculum. The kids LOVE it, and wait for the STEM class. I am starting to see the applied principles of the design and shared inquiry approach of STEM carried over into our collaborative classroom projects, which is so exciting!!
