Science has often proven that indulging in sensory play promotes learning through positive learning experiences. Having access to tools which provide desired sensory input or block undesired sensory input, gives the teacher the ability to modify and adapt any activity to individual student needs. This increases the overall efficiency of any activity. Being able to offer options such as a visual timer and swings for sensory breaks will enhance an already individualized and specialized program. The craft/photo boxes will be used to allow each student to have an “I’m Working for...” visual chart. This helps to keep them motivated throughout the day, as do using individual timers for preferred and non-preferred activities. Being able to offer sensory breaks within the classroom with swings, sensory socks and noise cancelling headphones, make them more instantaneous and effective. It also serves as a visual motivator. Pocket charts will house visual schedule components around the room. The kinetic sand is another great sensory tool and can be used with a variety of items such as the peg board stackers to build fine motor skills. Teachers who have access to tools which help their students with physical, emotional, intellectual and sensory impairments are more effective in maximizing student learning and potential.
