One thing that my students and I have worked on this year is the idea of “voice and choice” in supporting their mastery of grade level standards. My students have responded really well to a more personalized learning model and have pushed their learning to new heights simply because they had a choice in what they were doing. That being said, it stands to reason that improving the physical environment to a more flexible seating arrangement would lend itself to supporting their academic growth. A common misconception is that if students are not sitting quietly at a desk, they are not learning. I beg to differ! Most of my students learn best if they are allowed to work in an environment that they find comfortable. I have students ask me daily if they can sit on the floor, stand at a counter or lounge in my single bean bag chair. So many of students come from difficult situations outside of school so flexible seating options would allow them the opportunity to find a place of refuge for one hour a day.
