Before they are anything else, my students are curious about the world. When we read Angie Thomas's The Hate U Give, they researched the range of protests that have taken place over the last ten years in response to police brutality. When we read Tiffany Jackson's Allegedly, students made podcasts about the foster care system in the United States. At this low-income urban high school, 90 percent of my students are eligible for free and reduced lunch. We are racially diverse: 40 percent of my students are white, 40 percent are black, and 10 percent are Latinx. They are eager to read books that mirror their own experiences, that give voice to their own thoughts, that honor their own lives as worthy of talking about.
