Alphabetical decoding is a key skill that many of my kinder and 1st grade students are lacking. This includes knowing and applying the letter-sound relationship which will help them recognize and sound out words. Without the ability to turn letters into sounds, my students will be unable to develop more advanced skills later on. I am using a multi-sensory approach to learning this skill, which involves using all the senses during academic instruction. Currently, I use air writing, tracing letters in sand, and small magnetic letters for my students to tap into their other senses. While these activities are useful and engaging initially, the students are no longer engaged which is making progress much slower than anticipated. I would like to provide some more variety in activities that the students can participate in to increase their level of engagement. The products I have selected will provide my students with many different opportunities to use their sensory skills to help them make progress specifically in letter sound relationships and writing. I will be using them in the classroom setting as I work with small groups of 4-5 students focusing on the skill of alphabetical decoding and proper letter formation.
