Flexible seating has so many benefits for young children: Physical Health: Children need to move. Flexible seating, such as wobble chairs and yoga balls allows students to wobble, rock, bounce, lean or stand, which increases oxygen flow to the brain, blood flow and core strength. It also helps keep young minds more alert and focused. Many students struggle with staying focused. Wobble chairs and yoga ball seating have been proven to help young students. Flexible seating allows students to find a comfortable position in the classroom, which allows them to be calm, more focused and productive. As of now, my students only have traditional seating. They tend to fidget and get uncomfortable quickly. They lose focus. Flexible seating greatly benefits students with special needs as well. Sensory Input/Focus: Many flexible seating options stimulate students’ sense of touch. This type of stimulation can help children focus and process information. Sensory input is especially helpful for students with ADHD, ADD, and ASD. It works! A 2012 study from the University of Minnesota found that students participated 48 percent more in discussions in a classroom with collaborative group seating versus traditional lecture-style seating, and also improved their performance on standardized tests.
