These books will be the start of a classroom library of books for teacher read-aloud, small group social skills lessons, or for independent reading. My students really enjoy teacher read-aloud and the discussions that accompany this time. This is also a good opportunity for them to practice listening and speaking skills, taking turns, and discussing issues that they face on a daily basis. I've chosen these books based on the difficulties my students face in their regular classrooms, on the playground or lunchroom, or in their homes or outside activities. These books will provide opportunities for my students to sort out their emotions, teach social skills, and understand another's point of view. I can also use them to help with understanding school rules and social skills. Most importantly, picture books can help explain more abstract concepts which are often hard for special learners to conceptualize.
