Figure drawing occupies a special place in high school art education. The required skills challenge students to observe and empathize with real human beings, and to eventually learn to express themselves through these experiences. My students demonstrate a keen desire to master these skills, but the perceived difficulties in learning them often seem to place the skills beyond their reach. To most, the scariest part is drawing the facial features. After observing students struggle to create successful figure drawings for three years, I'm convinced that a better understanding of the structures behind these features is the key to improving their ability to draw. What better way to bolster that understanding than having them build these features in three dimensions, with their own hands? I believe the strategy of combining clay sculpture and drawing will greatly invigorate my students' interest and confidence, and pave their way to success in life figure drawing!
