Each resource will be used to safely harvest bees in order to start our Beekeeping club. Our plan is to house two bee hives just outside the window on the main hall of our campus in an area that students cannot access, but will be visible through large windows for students to enjoy. I also plan on cutting out the side of the hive and replacing the wood with Plexiglas so that students can observe the hive in action from the safety of the hallway. This project will provide an in-depth opportunity for educating students about bees, as well as teach them how to care for them in hopes of helping them better understand how one organism impacts an ecosystem. In order for this to happen we will need multiple hive parts including; three sets of frames which are the part of the hive that the bees build combs on and where we would harvest honey. I have selected two sets of medium frames for the supers, or honey sections, and one set of deep frames for the brooding chamber. We also need an excluder to keep the queen bee from moving into the top chambers. Finally we need the tools to work the hive and safety equipment which includes gloves, and a beekeeper suit. The final item is a complete hive set which will complete our second hive, and give us a template to use to build the first boxes. Ninety percent of the food we eat is pollinated by bees, which unfortunately, are disappearing, and scientists don't know why. Students will also make a difference by addressing the real-life problem of potential bee extinction. They are eager to get started, and with your help, they'll be on their way to becoming beekeepers!
