What’s the opposite of an AR-15? A ukelele. A ukelele is designed to create joy, community, and beauty. It is an instrument that promotes vulnerability and love and creativity and everything else good. And it’s way cheaper than an assault rifle. For the cost of a single AR-15, you can put an instrument of love and joy into the hands of ten or even twenty high school students. If you actually want to do a practical thing to make the world better, how about giving one of those students a ukelele instead? I intend to give away ten of these before the end of the school year, to be supported next year with a "Leap Day" program specifically for ukeleles. The Leap Day program is a twice-monthly day during which, instead of normal classes, PSA students choose three teacher-sponsored special classes: Rock Band, Yoga, Bee-Keeping, Cooking, Cartooning, Board Games, Robotics, and so on. I intend to offer a class specifically for beginning ukelele students; I will ask the students to whom these ukeleles go to commit to taking my Leap Day ukelele class as one of their three Leap Day options next year. I know of at least three students now would would like to own a ukelele but cannot afford one. I plan to canvass the faculty to identify seven more students who have shown an interest in music and musical instruments who come from families that are unlikely to be able to provide them with their own instruments. I intend to give these instruments away to the students and to encourage them to bring these instruments to school, to play outside or in my classroom during lunch. I'm primarily interested in having them experience the joy of owning and instrument and learning how to play it.
