In today's classroom, there are a few essential technological items. First, there is the SMART Board—through which most of the direct lessons are taught. However, as a teacher using the Teacher's College Curriculum, there is another critical item—the document camera. By using a document camera, any book—no matter how small the print—suddenly becomes a BIG BOOK! The number of books that can be shared with the class is instantly doubled. In the early grades, we place a huge emphasis on decoding and shared reading. By projecting a book, the whole class can read along and become more fluent with their reading. Not only can books be projected on a large screen with the use of a document camera, but student work can also be displayed and shared with the entire class. There is nothing like the look on a student's face when her writing has been selected to be shared with the class. With a document camera, I can display the student's writing for the class to see and we can all give the student a compliment and a tip for how to improve during the next writing workshop. By working together to give praise as well as helpful tips, we are not only creating better writers, but molding students into creative, inspired, critical thinkers who are willing to accept constructive criticism and use it to improve.
