The five years I have been teaching high school I have always felt that it was beneficial to stick to the classics. The novel choices have always been Romeo and Juliet, Julius Caesar, To Kill a Mockingbird, and so on. My students have read the novels, but it was always met with resistance.I remember one year a student proposed the idea of reading contemporary novels. I remember just pushing this idea to the back of my mind. This year I realized that I would get more involvement and increase student interest if I picked from novels that interest them and allowed them the choice of what novel they wanted to read for their literature circle. I have heard students express interest in reading The Hate U Give, The Maze Runner, novels by John Greene, and so on. I've practiced with short excerpts, but I am ready to take it to the next level with a full novel text. I am hoping to secure novels for my children.
