Our students work their way through our dyslexia program learning spelling rules and phonics in order to become better readers. They get so caught up in the phonics of a word and worrying about how to spell it, they forget to focus on the writing. By providing them with pocket spellers, we allow students to focus on being creative and take away the stress of spelling. In our class, we provide them with the tools they need to be successful. These pocket spellers are one more accommodation that allow our students to be on the same playing field as a typical student. Our students may struggle with spelling and reading, but they are phenomenal students. They just need a chance to succeed.
