Like the sea that few of my students have seen is the Black American experience. In addition, the small number of Black students who attend my school must see themselves represented in American literature, must see themselves as valued. Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God will provide a particularly vivid portrait of Black women and the struggles and quest for freedom embodied by the character of Janie. We will explore her life in writing and student-designed projects. We will place her experiences within the context of the broader Black experience.
