My students are talented. My students are intelligent. My students want to move mountains. I firmly believe the best way for them to tell their story is through music. I have never seen a group so eager to learn, to grow, and to make others smile. About 95% of our instrument inventory is obliterated. Despite all that, these students want to play. They want to fix the un-fixable, they will go to the lengths of air bowing with their broken instruments if it means they get close to playing. I want nothing more than to give them the instruments they deserve to play. These students are ready to excel in their musicianship. As stated before, the majority of our schools' orchestral instrument inventory is beyond repair. While we have several violins, the vast majority would cost more to repair than to get new ones. Some have scrolls completely ripped off. We have one cello that is okay to play. My cellists want to be able to take home a cello to practice, so they can become a better musician. I don't know many middle schoolers who would beg their music teacher to practice, but mine want to so badly. We have no double bass in good enough condition to play, so we have had to resort to not having a bass player despite having several students interested in the instrument. These kids deserve more. They want to improve. They inspire me daily with their drive. Now, I want to make it easier for their dreams to come true, so that we continue to inspire our youth through the universal language that is music.
