The non-fiction novel Columbine by David Cullen has won many awards as it covers 10 years of research around the people involved and reasons behind the Columbine shooting. By using the novel Columbine in our AP Language class, students will be able to look at real world events and learn from them. The book is set up as a complex series of events from multiple perspectives. Students must analyze evidence, timelines, and documents from the investigations while reading. Now, more than ever, a novel like Columbine is topical for high school students to read. The world of school shootings is their world. They deal with the stress of living in a society that experiences school shootings at an alarming rate. In addition, they are also a part of the solution. They are the future of our society and they are the ones who can make a change. They will vote. They will raise children. And they will eventually be the backbone of our country. It is imperative that they learn about the issues that concern our nation and become more knowledgeable about all perspectives so that they can be part of the prevention of further tragedies like Columbine and other recent school shootings.
