My students have very high sensory needs. They need a darker space within our classroom that they can use when they are feeling overwhelmed so they can then get back to learning. When these students are over or under stimulated they have difficulties staying focused and learning needed skills. The mosquito net canopy and the blinds will help to make a corner in my classroom the calming space that they need. The calming Autism ocean-wave aurora projector will project green and blue colors in the space to make the space more calming (these colors are calming colors and research shows that they help students with Autism). The fidget and squeeze toys will be available in this space as well to help with anxiety needs. Students with Autism also need deep pressure sensory input to either calm them down after being over stimulated or to provide stimulation when under stimulated. The weighted blanket will help to provide this needed pressure. The vibrating squeeze animal will also provide another deep pressure sensory input. I already have some pillows in my classroom that will be used in this calming sensory space and need another body pillow to put along the wall to make the space more comfortable. I want this to be a safe space for my students to use, because to a child with Autism the world is a very scary place.
