Our students are in need of hight interest books in a classroom library to keep them engaged in reading. Research has shown that people who read regularly are more thoughtful, curious, and empathetic (Novel Reading, Scientific American). We believe that a reading centered culture in our classroom will not only build strong educational foundations but also positively contribute support during a time in students’ lives that are notoriously difficult emotionally and interpersonally. Our classroom devotes 10 minutes or more to self selected, silent sustained reading each day. We need more titles for students to choose from to maintain the momentum of reading in class. Many of our students come from home environments that do not have books (8th grade student query, Sept 2018) and whose home addresses lie outside the public library system. We do not have classroom libraries in our Language Arts classes and the school librarian’s hours are limited. The requested funds, and carefully curated titles, will support literacy function, provide a central location for resources, help students learn about books, provide opportunities for independent reading and curricular extensions, and offer a focal point for students to talk and interact with books on a daily basis (The Five Functions of a Classroom Library, Scholastic). We want to honor and develop a love of reading that will take our students from classroom learners to lifelong learners. Surrounding our students with books celebrates and elevates reading and supports our enthusiasm for reading. To quote Malcolm Gladwell, “The values of the world we inhabit and the people we surround ourselves with have a profound effect on who we are.” We desire to show our love of learning through reading. Thank you for considering this project!
