Our growing school is in desperate need of classroom texts! Our school is still in the process of growing and expanding, so all of our funds go toward building our campus. There are no classroom sets of books available to the 8th graders, which has made it difficult to foster a community of readers within the classroom.
With the recent closing of our school's library, students have limited access to books. One of our biggest struggles this school year has been providing students with fair and equal access to engaging texts. Students are unable to get books to read, unless their families are able to get them to a public library. My students are at mixed levels, so I need texts that will be accessible to struggling readers, and that will still engage for voracious readers.
"A Monster Calls" and "American Born Chinese" are two texts that would enable me to show my students how moving reading can be. Both texts are full of beautiful images that enhance the words on the page, and robust themes that will be perfect for engaging all of my students (regardless of reading level) in class discussion. My students will not have access to these awesome texts without the support of the community.
These books will be an invaluable addition to the 8th grade library, and will be used for years to come!
