As a teacher, it's getting harder to compete with students and their phones and gaming systems. What happened to just picking up a delicious book and reading for hours? I took a serious look at the books in my classroom library and decided it was time to upgrade my selection. Very few students clamor for The Red Badge of Courage and don't care to be whisked away with Bilbo on a fantastic journey.
Nope. My guys and gals want realistic fiction. They want to read underdog stories and tales that give them hope.
Therefore, I enlisted in the help of RIF's favorite books of 2017. These perhaps could very well end up being new classics for my students. Oh sure, I'll still strongly insist they read The Outsiders or The Cay. But they have a hunger for something more modern. If they are going to put down the game controllers or not text their friends for hours, I have to make their time worthwhile.
So donors, I present to you, 30 or so books that will be poured over by my finicky middle school students. Thank you for your consideration.
