Many of my students are Hispanic and bilingual. Many of their parents only speak and read in Spanish, but my students’ abilities to interpret printed text are limited to English. This realization led me to wonder how I could help families create a culture of print literacy. The obvious answer is to create a bilingual lending library with activities. My goal is to accumulate bilingual books, vocabulary cards, dictionaries and other games that will help all students better communicate with their families and each other! It's sad when students in the same class can't communicate with each other because of the language barrier. Hopefully these hands on materials will help them to learn the unfamiliar language and the communication barrier won't be as difficult!! This project will benefit my students because they will gain the understanding that being bilingual and bi-literate increases the depth of their insight and ability to make meaning in both languages!
