With this unit, my students will work in groups under the literature circle model. Each group will be allowed to choose their own graphic novel according to their interests and will lead their own discussions and reading. Our whole class lessons will focus on the history and theory of comic book art, how to make inferences based on both words and images, and how the art influences and supports the language. In their literature circles, the students will discuss necessary language arts skills through the lens of graphic novels, like character development, vocabulary, and literary analysis. Providing a diverse catalog of graphic novels will differentiate between student reading levels and student interests and allow all students to achieve their goals in language arts. We will use a literature circle format to increase student discussion and leadership. The literature circle model also allows students to choose their own book that matches their diverse needs and wants. Graphic novels have the unique ability to meet all students at their level and offer them something new to learn and grow with. Students with lower reading levels aren't as intimidated by the comic book format and can achieve success with lower anxiety over the material. Students with higher reading levels can learn to slow down and analyze instead of just skimming. All students have higher levels of interest and buy-in because graphic novels appeal to students' love of comics and art. Students will explore the wide array of graphic novels and genres available and discover how far they can go with literature.
