In first grade, my class participates in various projects and activities that require my students to research information and access programs. The early childhood grades the milestones of students’ educational lives are formed and developed. Here is where the foundation of learning takes place. Students develop their knowledge in reading and mathematics, as well as, sciences and social studies. Students with disabilities greatly benefit from technology in the classroom, as it enhances their learning experiences and retention of information. Having technology in the classroom will give my students access to use and familiarize themselves with a tool that will be a necessity for their success in their educational future. Both our language arts and math series incorporate technology in the curriculum. Unfortunately, our school doesn’t have sufficient funds to purchase additional technology resources to enrich the students' learning experience within the classroom. Although our school has a computer lab, we are limited to 45 minutes once a week. I strive to make learning engaging, fun, and relevant for my students, who in turn, have pushed me to be a better teacher, a better citizen, and a better person. After one year of teaching at my current school, it is apparent that the digital divide in education is unsettling. My students simply do not have access to the technology they should. The iPads will be used as a student incentive to reinforce, practice and gain mastery in the skills at their individualized levels and laptop will be used to monitor, record and share their progress.
