There is so much more to reading than simply a student picking up a book and reading it to themselves. Students need to be exposed to all types of reading on a daily basis. If the students are not exposed to examples of what good reading sounds like, they will not be able to do it themselves. Read a louds offer students, of all ability levels, a chance to be submersed in literature without the pressures of having to decode the words independently. By solely having to listen, we can deepen our understanding and comprehension of stories through conversation and collaboration. Sometimes, it is as simple as hearing ONE good book that sparks a student's love of reading. These Tacky books do just that. They are so fun and engaging, and the students LOVE them! After hearing these books read to them, it is my hope that the students will be inspired to read them independently, as well as want to read all of the other Tacky books. The racks will allow me to display these books to heighten interest, and allow them to be available for students to read themselves in the future. Who wouldn't want to cozy up with a comfy pillow and read some awesome books? The kids will LOVE lounging around with the bed pillows and reading!
