Kid’s Café continues to provide functional work and daily living skills. Activities include preparing menus, writing and distributing the menus to staff, and preparing the menu items. During sales, the students are responsible for serving the food, participating in an assembly line, using appropriate language, as well as using the cash register to calculate sales and give change, if necessary. A ledger is kept to record sales and purchases. Students also participate in monthly shopping trips where they are required to locate items using a word or picture list. Throughout all of the activities, students are encouraged to use appropriate cooking appliances and utensils as well as using the microwave and dishwasher. Using a cash register provides the opportunity to use technology that they may be exposed to in the future as part of their work experience.
