In Kindergarten we focus on locomotor skills, and we begin to teach throwing and catching. I like to use bean bags for this so the students are safe and feel comfortable before I give them a ball. We work on special awareness and general and personal space, and the hula hoops are very helpful for those skills. We also cross the curriculum with all of this equipment in teaching colors and shapes. In first grade we build on what we have learned in Kindergarten. We begin to throw and catch at different distances so the bean bags are good for that activity. We graduate to balls that are soft before we use harder balls. We have many games we play with balls and bean bags as well. In second and third grade we throw and catch and aim at targets with the balls. We learn to actually hula hoop as well as play games with the hula hoops. All of this equipment will help each student learn to master TEKS required by the state, but more importantly the students will learn to enjoy being active. It's been proven in studies that students who exercise do better academically. My job is to instill in them a love of exercise so they can be active for the entirety of their lives.
