My students do not want to read just any book, enjoyability and comprehension increase when the text is in their first language. They take comfort in viewing texts that are in their primary language. Children love reading books that connect to their culture and language! Having text that is culturally and language relevant is extremely important to the success of my students. Giving them access to these books will not only increase their interest in reading but also their academic achievement. This includes literature that pertains to all interest levels, including fiction and nonfiction. Using this literature will allow me to teach skills while supporting the language.
